5 Essential Muay Thai Techniques You Need to Know!
Muay Thai is often compared to the game of chess. For every move made, there is always an effective countermove, with IQ sometimes even more important than sheer aggression and strength. Whether you are just starting out or are a seasoned pro, there is always room to learn new tricks. Here are 5 Muay Thai techniques to add to your arsenal.
1. Catch the Trap & Sweep:
One of the more basic sweeping techniques, but by far one of the most effective. By stepping slightly away from your opponent’s kick, you reduce the force when you catch it. With their balance still on one leg, it’s just a small kick above the ankle that sends them gracefully to the canvas.
2. Fake Staircase to Main Staircase:
Almost all of the set-up techniques in Muay Thai stem from fundamental attacks such as the jab, the push kick, the body kick, and so on. Once your opponent starts respecting your attacks by instinctively reacting to your feints or movements, you know you can set up attacks with fake attacks.
3. The Spinning Elbow:
Perhaps the most spectacular move in all of Muay Thai, but is it actually effective? In short, yes, the spinning elbow is definitely not something you want to get hit with, as they can pack quite a bit of power. But don’t think you can just walk up to your opponent and land one. Setup is essential to landing the spinning elbow strike; if your opponent is stretching for a punch or is pressed against the ropes, this is one of your best chances to land this strike.
4. The Flying Knee:
As beautiful as the flying knee is, it is rarely seen in the ring. Mainly because it is a very difficult attack to land and also somewhat risky, if you miss you are vulnerable and often exposed upon landing. However, if you land it just right, the rewards are great, because this attack generates enormous power by throwing your entire body weight and speed into the small area of the knee.
5. The Reverse Elbow:
Some of you hardcore MMA fans may remember Anderson Silva's reverse elbow from his pre-UFC days with Cage Rage, where he stunned crowds around the world by knocking out his opponent with this One Bak style elbow. As with other moves on this list, setup is key to landing this strike. Check out this great breakdown from Muay Thai fighter Jack Farren who completely nailed it in one of his fights.
